The paradox of a large catalogue is that it becomes harder to use as it grows. Netflix's home screen is not a library; it is a recommendation surface, tuned to keep you engaged rather than to help you decide quickly.
Working around that is mostly a matter of refusing to browse.
Stop scrolling the home row
The main page shows you a small, heavily personalised slice of the catalogue, weighted toward titles the service wants to promote. Scrolling it feels like searching but functions more like channel surfing. If you have scrolled past the same thumbnail three times, you are not choosing, you are stalling.
Search for a person, not a title
The single most effective habit is searching by director, writer or cinematographer rather than genre. Genre categories are broad and algorithmically fuzzy. A named person is a much stronger signal of the kind of thing you actually like.
If you enjoyed something, find out who made it and search that name. The hit rate is dramatically better than any recommendation row.
Decide the shape before the title
Choose the constraints first: how long you have, whether you want subtitles tonight, and whether you want something demanding or something easy. Narrowing to "ninety minutes, no subtitles, not heavy" eliminates most of the catalogue before you look at a single thumbnail.
Keep a list
Decision fatigue is worst at the moment you sit down. Adding things to your list when you encounter them elsewhere, rather than when you want to watch something, separates the choosing from the watching. Future you will thank present you.
Give it fifteen minutes, then leave
The sunk-cost instinct is strong and it is wrong. If a film has not established a reason to keep watching within fifteen minutes, stopping is a legitimate outcome. Abandoning something quickly is what makes it affordable to try more things.
Verify availability
Streaming catalogues change constantly and vary by region. Anything you read about availability, here included, should be confirmed on the platform before you plan an evening around it.
