Grand Theft Auto VI is built around two playable characters, Jason and Lucia. It is the first mainline entry with a playable female protagonist, and the first to centre a relationship rather than an individual ascent.
Lucia
Lucia is introduced leaving a correctional facility. That framing matters: the story begins after a fall rather than before one, which inverts the usual Grand Theft Auto arc of an outsider climbing. She is consistently presented as the more decisive of the pair.
Her significance is not that she is the first playable woman in the series, though she is. It is that the writing appears to give her the harder position, with more to lose and fewer options.
Jason
Jason is the steadier half of the partnership, positioned as someone drawn into escalation rather than driving it. In the Extended Look he is the one taking the job, moving through the world with the ease of someone who already knows the people in it.
The pairing
Rockstar has framed the two as a modern Bonnie and Clyde. That is a useful shorthand and a limited one: it signals a criminal couple on a downward trajectory, but it does not capture the mechanical consequence, which is that you play both sides of a relationship.
The companion interaction system, activated by holding a trigger to surface contextual prompts, turns that relationship into something you maintain rather than watch. Applied across a chapter-based campaign with accumulating choices, it suggests a story about two people gradually diverging.
How they change
Both characters respond visually to how you play them. Diet, exercise and how nights are spent all register in their appearance over time, making the pair a persistent record of your decisions rather than fixed models.
What is not known
The full arc, whether the protagonists can be separated freely, and how switching works outside missions have not been detailed. Anything you read stating otherwise is inference from footage.
