Rockstar has not announced a download size for Grand Theft Auto VI. Any specific figure circulating now is a guess, and the number usually only appears when store listings go live close to launch.
What you can do is prepare, because the one thing nobody disputes is that it will be large.
What comparable releases needed
Rockstar's own recent open worlds are the useful reference. Red Dead Redemption 2 asked for roughly 150GB on console, and Grand Theft Auto V's current-generation release sits near 100GB. Both grew after launch through updates.
Treat those as a floor rather than a forecast. Two console generations of texture and audio budget separate them from a 2026 release, and modern titles have trended upward, not down.
The problem is your console, not the game
This is where people get caught out. Console storage is smaller than the box says:
- PlayStation 5: 825GB drive, roughly 667GB usable.
- PlayStation 5 Slim and Pro: larger drives, same principle.
- Xbox Series X: 1TB drive, roughly 802GB usable.
- Xbox Series S: 512GB drive, roughly 364GB usable.
A Series S owner with a few large games installed can genuinely be unable to fit a modern release without deleting something. That is worth checking now rather than at midnight on launch day.
How to make room properly
- Check what you actually play. Most consoles carry two or three finished games nobody has opened in a year.
- Move rather than delete. Both consoles can shift games to a cheap external USB drive and copy them back later, which is far faster than re-downloading.
- Expand if you can. PS5 takes an internal NVMe drive; Xbox Series consoles take a proprietary expansion card. Both let a current-gen game run directly from the expansion.
- Leave headroom. Consoles need free working space to install and patch. A drive filled to the last gigabyte will fail an update.
Pre-loading
Pre-orders opened on 25 June 2026, and pre-load typically unlocks a few days before release so the download finishes ahead of launch. The size is announced at that point, which is the first reliable number anyone will have.
If your connection is slow, that window is the difference between playing on release morning and watching a progress bar.
