The Korean box office has a new champion, and its name is "Colony".

The Numbers Don't Lie

In less than 24 days, "Colony" has surpassed 5 million moviegoers, a feat it achieved two days faster than 2025's biggest hit, "My Daughter Is a Zombie". To put that into perspective, this is only the second film in 2026 to reach this milestone, following in the footsteps of "The King's Warden". The Korean Film Council announced this milestone on June 13, KST, solidifying "Colony"'s position at the top of the Korean box office.

A Recipe for Success

So, what's driving "Colony"'s success? For starters, it's a zombie movie, a genre that's proven to be a goldmine in Korea. But "Colony" has more going for it than just its genre. The film boasts a star-studded cast, including Jun Ji Hyun, Ji Chang Wook, and Shin Hyun Been, among others. And with Yeon Sang Ho at the helm - the director behind "Train to Busan" and "Peninsula" - you know you're in for a wild ride. The movie's premise, which follows survivors trapped in a building as they face off against a rapidly mutating virus, is the perfect recipe for a thrilling, edge-of-your-seat experience.

The Verdict

Honestly, this level of success isn't surprising, given the talent involved. "Colony" is a masterclass in building tension and features some of the best performances of the year. If you're a fan of zombie movies or just great storytelling in general, "Colony" is a must-watch. And if you're looking for more Ji Chang Wook, you can catch him in his new variety show "Kumusta" on Viki. As for "Colony", it's clear that this movie is going to be a game-changer for the Korean box office, and we can't wait to see what's next for this talented cast and crew.
